Is Black Friday Really Worth it?

Only 1 more month to go before Black Friday 2009. I have avoided it every year, and feel guilty about doing so. I heard that the deals should be really good this year, given the economy. I get paid the day before Thanksgiving, so I will have some cash to burn. The question is…is it really worth it? Everyone I talked to about it ends up only buying things for themselves, rather than others.

It’s worth it!!

Short answer - NO. It is now at the point where people line up on Thanksgiving day to join in the hype. It’s not worth it. Here are some things you need to know.
1)Many items sold in the big retailers are actually items that didn’t sell well to begin with.
2)fine print tells you that Black Friday items may be items previously purchased, and returned, or refurbished items.
3)If there is a malfunction with the item, you may not be able to return it to the store. (this personally happened to a friend of mine who bought a super cheap flat screen TV, only to find out it was a return to begin with, and had to send it to the manufacturer for repair)
4) Limited stock means that you may not get that DVD player for 5.00, but the store has plenty of 250.00 ones in stock.
5)Many items that sell out in store, mysteriously appear available for on-line purchase 2 weeks later, for the same, if not lower price.
6)Many stores that advertise price match discounts, or a refund of the difference if you purchase a product from them, only to go even lower - are not valid. (Go to a store that has a refund policy, that if you pay 1,000 for a TV today, and a month later it’s on sale for 750.00, they will refund the 250.00) Sounds like a good idea, BUT….that TV will not be put on sale on Black Friday. No refund for you NEXT!!!!
These are all things to consider.

It just depends on you. The more generous people will spend money on others, (as well) as buying a thing or two for themselves. Nothing wrong with that! It doesn’t have to be one way or another! If you are in a crunch for money, (and even if your not really) it can be great for you! I plan on going out this year for the first year. :) Only reason I never did before was because I was always too lazy to wake up and stay up. But I’m pushing myself this year because I know I will be tight for cash! :) Jess | Oct 28, 2009

its worth only what you figure …

I avoid it like the plague.

I would rather pay full price on all my stuff than to end up in a shoving match with a woman who still has curlers in her hair and is wearing a bathrobe because she thinks that shopping for christmas presents at 5 am means she doesn’t have to get dressed for public.

It really depends on what you will be buying. Check out the fliers. You have to know prices. I have actually gone out on Black Friday. It is not fun to say the least. I already don’t like to shop. Shoppers displaying blatant greed really rubs me the wrong way. It seems over the top.

I consult the fliers. I have done some research on prices. I know what I’m wanting to buy. I didn’t go out last year. I don’t know if I will this year or not. It has to be really great for me to make the effort. I don’t like the dark or the cold or shopping. If I’m going to grin and bear it - it better be fantastic.
