Why is it that no one ever wondered…?
about the ethics in the movies "Hook" and "Dickie Roberts: Former Childhood Star" when both are playing and sleeping with children, but it’s such a big deal when someone does it in real life… isn’t it safe to say that Michael Jackson IS (metaphorically speaking) Dickie Roberts, or Peter Pan? And when i say sleep I mean in the same room, not in the same bed.
I think you missed the part where i said not in the same bed.

yep you are right girl see what people dont know is that michaels bedroom is 2 stories [ he showed it on tv ] and it makes me so mad when people say he did that when he didnt

korey a | Sep 17, 2007

Because it’s a STORY, you know NOT REAL. How would you feel if a fully grown man wanted to share a bed with your young son or daughter??
MeeshyB | Sep 16, 2007

You had an interesting point up until the end. Michael Jackson was in the SAME BED as children, and admittedly so. If you define this issue in this way, it shoots your argument right out of the water.

Besides: movies are FICTION. Michael Jackson is real life. Real life people have real life motivations, mental issues, and potential ulterior ethical considerations. In other words, in real life when a creepy man wants to sleep with children, 99% of the time it turns out he is molesting them. That’s real life. That’s a problem. Did Michael Jackson molest anyone? Who knows, but when you look at the statistics for what happens with other people who act like Jackson, minus the enormous riches and creative attorneys, it is no wonder that people were concerned by his actions.

So the truth is that people HAVE likely wondered this. But then they come back to earth and see that our jails are filled with pedophiles, and it concerns them. No wonder people are suspicious of Michael Jackson, right or wrong.
Mr. Taco | Sep 16, 2007

ABUSING children (or anyone, for that matter - as age does not determine the value of a life) is a "big deal". Perceiving more than what’s happening in non-abusive interactions or contact is your own issue. Our perceptions, dislikes and discomforts are uniquely our own.
Lost Panda | Sep 16, 2007

Sorry, I haven’t seen them, but I’ll check them out. Whether you like Michael or hate him, I do not accept the proposition he is a chester. I’ve said it before, I think he just likes to play snap towel

Is this a good introduction to a book?
Hello my name is Chandler and i’m 15, I am writing a book about the end of the world, I wanted to know if this was a "catchy" introduction to a story, does it make you want to read more? Or is it just plain boring. The reason I want to know this is, if i wrote the whole book this way and its boring, nobody will read it, but if its catchy, it might catch the eye of a publisher.

*The world on it’s deathbead*

There was allot of shouting going on in the streets that day. Cars began to con-jest and honk loudly at one another. The wind began to slow its whisp and the streets were lit bright with a glare. The masses were praying for mercy at the great circular light in the horizon, indeed they all feared for our lives. We simply stared in dis belief as the clouds began to part into smoke rings that moved outward. A gust of wind caught my side as I walked along heading back to my apartment. My eyes ever so often caught a glance of the mass happening, but I dismissed it all so that I would remain calm in my final minutes of life. The crowd stood motionless, silently waiting as the light grew nearer. I couldent help but notice all of these people showed no emotion at all, they gazed quietly knowing this was most certainly the end. The wind then died down and a sudden silence fell upon us. I watched as the light grew brighter and brighter from off to the ocean. The sky began to wrinkle and rip as if it were a painted canvas. There was a prominate humming noise rang through the streets like an approaching train. Maple leaves fluttered from the trees and snapped past us signaling that the wind was picking back up I then picked up my pace to a full run as I darted around randomly parked cars in the streets. My eyes were sent up above me to see the moon, it was a dark ring in the blareing white sky. People began to shout as the air grew hot and shadows shot past us darkening. My attention was directed to the sound of classical music which was being played from the open door of someones car. There shouting was silenced as masses of glass shattered from the skyscrapers and fell to them. Shockwaves of dust roared down the streets like a hoard of rampaging bulls. The dark escence of death began to flood around me. While darting across the street, I looked behind to see that the whole sky lit up to the flareing britness of the sun. I then rushed to the shadow behind a local bank, while doing so I felt the heat and air pressure rise to an unworldly amount. My hands were sent over my ears as they began to pop. I shielded my whole face hiding in this dark oasis of shade. Then, all pressure, heat and sound stopped, my squinted eye caught a glance of tiny lines of smoke that trailed from every object and eventually curved into the direction of the bright light. Then, my resting place, the shadow of a bank grew pitch black as opposed to the white asphalt and surrounding sky scrapers. The smoke reversed directions and my vision began to fade out. I realized that this was the end for me, my life was no more. Something had happened to the world that was truly evil, something that nobody expected. I began to realize that everyone on the beaches must have been either burt to death, or crushed by the extreme air pressure. Even in this darkened shadow, my skin felt as if it were melting which was probibly true. What seemed like hours were only a few seconds of light and the sound of humming. My mind raced with possibilities of what was going on, I pondered the thought I was the last living being in this city, or perhaps the world. The pain soon grew to enormous to think, the heat was unbearable and I knew that this was where I would have to give up. Instantly, my brain activity ended as if I were falling asleep and that was the last thing I remember from the world I had known for so long.

While our old wold had come to an end, a new world…. had just been born.
Please note this inst the final version, spelling and punctuation arent corrected.

A little confusing. Only so many descriptive sentences should be used and I think you used to many. Work on spelling too. Get an editor or someone good with writing who you trust to help you. I think there is hope for it.
Mbjhhjk | Feb 03, 2010

"…but if its catchy, it might catch the eye of a publisher."

– It doesn’t work like that. You need more than a catchy opening, you need superb writing. Your work is laced with spelling and grammar errors to the point that no publisher will take you seriously. Unfortunately, the bad writing kills it for me. It’s good for your age, but work on your writing, especially the basics like spelling and grammar, and even sentence structure. Don’t worry about publishing, just write for fun. I stopped reading somewhere near the end because I couldn’t continue to take the English language being botched this badly. No offense, and you can get angry with what I’ve written, but being angry doesn’t improve your writing. Keep trying and you’ll get better over time. Just forget about publishing until you drastically improve; it takes years of writing before you start writing quality stuff. Good luck.

One more thing, if it was better written then it would’ve caught my attention.
Joss | Feb 03, 2010

It’s a good start!

I think you have a knack for using imagery, which is definitely a key component of writing a good story. Also, the harried pace of the writing helps involve the reader in the scene.

On the other hand, however, the previous poster is right. You should definitely work closely with an editor on this, because there are a lot of misspellings and mechanical errors. You will definitely need to break this up into paragraphs as well, because reading it as one block of text can get confusing. If you are serious about being published, you will want to submit a sparkling manuscript, as free of errors as possible. (Although, at 15, I would say practice writing more before you consider publishing. For writing, just like any other pursuit, practice is the best way to grow and improve.)

Also, when you use imagery you still need to be thoughtful of its implications. Although the language is figurative, it still needs to portray a believable image that makes sense. One example: "My hands were sent over my ears as they began to pop." My first thought was to ask who sent your hands over your ears? It just doesn’t really make sense. You may consider saying something more like, "I threw my hands to my ears just as they began to pop." or "Instinctively, my hands shot up to my ears…"

I hope this helped! I wish you luck in the writing process :) Don’t give up, and practice makes perfect!

I think your idea to write a book is ambitious.

Let me mention your strong points first, and then offer a critique with a few suggestions.

You have a vivid imagination and a good vocabulary, as well as some ability with words.

You need to develop that ability if you want to be a writer. To become a published writer will take a lot of work over time. And I mean a number of years. Malcolm Gladwell in his book "Outliers: The Story of Success," based on thorough research, has pointed out that it takes about ten years, or 10,000 hours, of practice to become a master at writing or piano or a sport, and so on.

Publishers look at specific things in reading usually the first paragraph or so of a novel (I take it you are considering writing a novel) to decide whether to read on or reject it.

Let’s pretend I had written your long paragraph above. Then I put it away for a few weeks then went back to it and re-read my writing. What would I do?

Well, I would decide that not to many people would want to read my long paragraph, so I would break it up into 7-10 smaller ones.

I would notice my spelling errors (this is a super-quick turnoff for publishers) and run my programs spell check and correct the errors.

I would go over my writing, line for line, noting my word choices–do they really say what I mean them to say?–and my punctuation.

I would dramatize things more, get another character or characters in there, with some dialogue: "Hey, what’s happening. where are you going? Wait!" Something like that. Make it less narration, more scene. I would compare it to published, best-selling novels, for style and structure.

"The reason I want to know this is, if i wrote the whole book this way and its boring, nobody will read it, but if its catchy, it might catch the eye of a publisher." It takes a lot more than catchiness to win over a publisher. This book, written by a very successful agent, goes over most of what publishers are looking for: "Writing the Breakout Novel" bu Donald Maass…

http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Breakout-N ovel-Donald-Maass/dp/158297182X/ref=sr_1 _1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=126522532 0&sr=8-1

If you’re serious about being a writer, spend a few years learning your craft and developing your abilities.

Is a baby on board sign safe?
Someone gave me one at my baby shower, but I vaguely remember hearing they could be dangerous. Could they be too distracting to other drivers?
It also seems that a great many asinine drivers now take offense to them and think they are some way of bragging. Will these deeply disturbed and ignorant individuals actually find it more tempting to drive recklessly around my vehicle?
I understand them to have been useful as some sort of aid to rescuers in case of a car accident…would this still be relevant? Would the sign even stay up in such an event?
Perhaps I am being too paranoid… I was just slightly disturbed at the people who seemed to think it meant they got "2000 extra points" for hitting the baby, and then that story of the mother pulled from the vehicle and saved only to have her baby later found dead in the car-seat that had gotten wedged under the mangled dash of her car sort of lowered my expectations of rescue workers. Here I am worrying about that stuff when the obvious threat to my baby is a random zombie attack!!! What will I do???

Dangerous? No. Useful? No.

If you are in a car accident, the carseat is usually the sign to rescue workers that there is or was a baby in the car.

EDIT: K- I wasn’t even going to bring up the zombie factor…you are merely stating the obvious.
neato1975 | Feb 03, 2010

Could they be too distracting to other drivers? -The same could be said of bumper stickers

Will these deeply disturbed and ignorant individuals actually find it more tempting to drive recklessly around my vehicle? - I don’t even know how to answer this… This is seems like a REALLY paranoid question… I don’t think anyone is going to drive recklessly around your car ON PURPOSE…
T3PO loves the BooJu | Feb 03, 2010

Personally, I would not use one. I think it would put my child at too great a risk in the event of a zombie apocalypse; my understanding is that zombies enjoy younger brains, and would zero in on those things like crazy.
K | Feb 03, 2010

I dont think they are dangerous, but I never bothered with one. People who drive like idiots will drive like idiots whether they know you have a baby on board or not. And no sign can stop accidents from happening.

Hun I think your being to paranoid. If you want to use it then use it ( though I don’t really believe it helps) & if you don’t want to use it then don’t. Personally I’m not going to use one but it’s your car & baby.
I LOVE K’s answer :) Charlotte's due March 22! | Feb 03, 2010

I don’t know _anyone_ who would deliberately drive like a dick just because a mother is in her car with a baby. the sign wouldn’t necessarily tip them off that there was a baby either — you can see the car seat from outside of the car.

a friend has a yellow bumper sticker that says, ‘baby I’m bored.’ ha! right?

There are four Phantasm movies out and the last film had a ending that left it all up in the air. The names of films are Phantasm, Phantasm II The Ball Is Back, Phantasm III Lord Of The Dead, and Phantasm IV Oblivion. "We need the last Phantasm film and finally put the Tall Man to rest!

All the Phantasm movies have left the ending open for sequels.

According to imdb.com there is no Phantasm 5 being planned. They have to keep Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man or it wouldn’t be worth watching. He really freaked me out when I first saw Phantasm back in the day.

Who exactly am I? How do you be yourself? How am I supposed to think?
I’m not looking for a religious answer. I’ve just been confused about myself. I don’t know who I am. I think I worry about what others think, but I don’t know how to ignore it.

Growing up, I’ve been criticized for who I am by some people, and I think ever since then I’ve been faking my way through life. I’ve been putting up an image that when everyone thinks of me, I want them to believe that I’m just "o.k"

I want to become a person that fears no criticism, its kinda hard though since I’m still in high school. The way I feel now, I just want to reboot myself. Delete everything that I don’t need and begin the way I’m supposed to be. But I don’t know how.

How am I suppose to live life? What is my goal? I don’t even know because I don’t know who am, and what I’m supposed to do. I feel I have confused myself, and asking this to my parents wouldn’t help because of what they would think of me! I think I have lost my mind, my identity. I need help to find how to be who I truly am deep inside.

well… i guess i can relate to you. i always got teased and made fun of. but really you just have to get over it. (btw im only in 8th grade) anyone who tries to make fun of me now i just either ingnore it or ttell them to shut the f*** up.
just think about it… do you like to laugh a lot? do you like something that others dont? who cares, do wat you like. dont be exactly like everyone else. have your own opinnion and style. be unique and just have fun. thats all you can do. just let the chips fall where they may.
about the living life, just live it the way you want it to be lived. personally i want to live it to the fullest. do anything you want. you only have one life. do a lot of things… see the world, go scuba diving, go sky diving, do anything that sounds good to you. i just sit around and reaad but who cares thats the way i want to be and if that is the way you want it to be then make it that way…
hope i helped… :)

I’m pretty similar as you, while I usually am myself, I care way too much what others think of me. I try to convince myself that I don’t, but deep down I know I do. In high school people usually don’t know who they are and there’s a lot of peer pressure. It’s going to change as you get older but you just have to remember that people will always to talk and criticize but eventually you will learn that they aren’t important.

The truth is, you are no one. And everyone. There is no such thing as having a personality. It is just your brain telling you how you should act. You goal, consists of your past, your present, and what you want in your future. You are an enigma of every person you have ever known, saw, spoken to, or read about. If something sounded awesome to you, your brain incorporated it into your behavior. This is why some children act like ninjas while others act like pirates or dinosaurs. If you want to find "yourself" look in "yourself". Chances are you already know.

you should just live your life however you feel (legally), after all it is your life.
Everyone criticizes it is what it is so let it be. need help with that? Just look at those who criticize and judge AND make fun of others they are more miserable than you because they conform to society.

don’t worry about what other think only what you think.

As we grow up we play "roles" we see around us to be accepted by the other people in our life. Then one day we wake up and realize that we are just mouthing words from a "script". That they aren’t necessarily our own words and it’s a shock to realize that. But that’s the beginning of becoming yourself. First, calm down. Everyone goes through this. Some sooner some later. Some may never realize what they are doing. The process of becoming your true self is not a quick one, so don’t try to rush it. From here on you are going to question everything you’ve ever thought you believed from political to personal. To start, the next time you hear yourself voicing an opinion stop and think if that is really what you believe. Take time to think about that particular subject and review what you know about it. If needed, go online and look up facts about the topic. Then decide what it is that you really think. You may find you still have the same opinion you were voicing before or you may have a completely different opinion. Anything goes. And remember, everything is always open for review as we learn more about things. As you go through topic after topic in your mind, you will start to notice trends. For instance if you review a couple of political topics and you find you come down on the liberal side you will probably find future political topics will pretty much come down on the liberal side also. People who think liberally (or conservatively) on one item usually have mostly liberal (or conservative) opinions. So it’s not as hard as it seems when you are looking at reviewing everything from scratch! Remember, the only person you have to please is yourself. You may lose some friends when you do this because you will no longer have anything in common. That’s OK. You never really did have anything in common, you just didn’t know it. You will find others that think like you do now. Maybe you have always said you were going to become a lawyer because you knew that’s what your parents wanted. Now you will have to decide what it is you really want to do with your life. You may still really want to be a lawyer or you might find you want to be a priest. too bad if your parents don’t agree. It’s your life. Before you know it, you will be on your way to being and acting your real self. Good luck!!
